A city council candidate running to represent District 29 in Forest Hills picked up the endorsement of an influential progressive activist and actress on Tuesday.
Aleda Gagarin, who is running to replace the term-limited Karen Koslowitz, received the backing of Cynthia Nixon, the progressive actress who gave Andrew Cuomo a spirited challenge in the 2018 Democratic primary for governor.
“A queer mom and a fierce activist, Aleda will make sure that all New Yorkers have quality housing, healthcare, education, and a just, sustainable future,” Nixon said. “Aleda knows that our wellness is shared, and will leave no New Yorker behind.”
The 29th Council district covers a number of central Queens neighborhoods, including Rego Park, Forest Hills, Richmond Hill and Gagarin’s home neighborhood of Kew Gardens.
“I am honored to be endorsed by such a fierce leader in the progressive movement who has never backed down from the tough fights,” said Gagarin. “I have always looked up to Cynthia Nixon as an example of someone willing to stand up for the working class.”
Gagarin’s endorsements include Assemblymember Ron Kim, plus Councilmembers Brad Lander and Jimmy Van Bramer, who are running for City Comptroller and Queens Borough President, respectively.
Also endorsing Gagarin is Zephyr Teachout, who ran against Cuomo in the 2014 Democratic primary.
The outgoing Koslowitz has endorsed community activist Lynn Schulman in the race.

FH along with all of NYC needs conservative leadership. We have seen a decline in quality of life and an increase in cost of living along with crime because of liberal and democrat policy. These politicians have erased decades of progress and prosperity in just a matter of a few years. Vote with your head, vote red.
I would stay away from anyone Cynthia Nixon endorses. Let’s not forget how she endorsed deBlasio in 2013 saying he is what we needed, well, we all know how that turned out, enough said!
Nixon is en elitist hypocrite with absolutely no knowledge of government. Gagarin has demonstrated he has little understanding of the voters he pretends to represent.
