Police exchanged several rounds of fire with a man who was holding his wife—an off-duty NYPD officer—hostage in South Ozone Park Tuesday.
Cops shot and wounded the irate man who used his wife’s service weapon to threaten her inside their home on 133rd Avenue near 130th Street. The off-duty officer called 911 at around 8:40 a.m. to report her husband’s threats.
When police officers from the 106th Precinct knocked on the front door of their house, the husband threatened to shoot them as well as his wife, police officials said.
The officers called for backup from members of the NYPD’s Emergency Service Unit (ESU), who arrived minutes later.
ESU officers attempted to speak to the suspect but were unable to calm him down. He shot multiple rounds at the officers.
The suspect’s wife jumped out of the house from the second-floor window to escape during the standoff.
However, her husband quickly turned the gun toward her and shot in her direction as well as at the ESU officers.
Officers returned fire and shot him in the arm. He then retreated back into the home.
At that point, the suspect’s brother walked up and officers from the Hostage Negotiation Team worked with him to talk the suspect down.
They were able to calm him down and get him to surrender to police with the help of the brother.
The suspect was arrested and hospitalized for the single gunshot wound in his right arm.
The off-duty officer was also taken to an area hospital and treated for a broken leg that she sustained from jumping from the window.
Rodney Harrison, the NYPD Chief of Dept., held a press conference later in the day to discuss the incident and noted that the police deal with many domestic violence disputes—although not many involving officers.
“Unfortunately, we respond to a host of different domestic [violence incidents] throughout the city,” Harrison said. “Very rarely do we get one where it’s one of our own.”
