A deadly accident over the weekend at a notorious Kew Gardens Interchange left one person dead and another injured.

The accident occurred at around 8:30 p.m. Saturday night when a 2016 Jeep Grand Cherokee was exiting the Grand Central Parkway onto Union Turnpike.

According to police sources, the vehicle was speeding as it exited the parkway and the driver lost control of the car, which then swerved across several lanes, mounting the sidewalk before slamming into a concrete barrier on the Union Turnpike overpass over the Grand Central Parkway just before Queens Boulevard.

The Jeep then burst into flames. The driver was trapped inside the vehicle and died on the scene, while the passenger, a 31-year-old man, was rushed to a local hospital with serious injuries.

The driver of the vehicle has not yet been identified.

The accident caused the closure of the westbound lanes of Union Turnpike for several hours, snarling traffic on the Van Wyck Expressway and Grand Central Parkway. The lanes were reopened by 11 p.m.
