MTA Completes $5.6M Improvements to Whitestone Bridge

Bronx-Whitestone Bridge (MTA/ Patrick Cashin)

July 2, 2020 By Allie Griffin

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) has completed a $5.6 million traffic redesign to the Bronx-Whitestone Bridge that it says improves traffic flow and safety.

The finished work improves access to the Whitestone Expressway and Cross Island Parkway, creating easier connections for drivers.

The agency constructed an additional entry lane from the bridge to the Whitestone Expressway and a new exit ramp to the Cross Island Parkway.

The upgrades also included new guide rails, a new LED roadway lighting system and a new overhead sign structure.

“This improvement for the Bronx-Whitestone Bridge is truly a gamechanger for those traveling to Queens and Long Island,” said Daniel DeCrescenzo, Acting President MTA Bridges and Tunnels. “The new lane design will provide a safer and more efficient ride for those taking the Cross Island or Whitestone Expressway.”

The MTA completed the work on June 15, four weeks ahead of schedule.

The agency said that it was able to complete the job quickly, since it was able to take advantage of the lower traffic volumes during the coronavirus pandemic.

Approximately 110,000 people drive across the Whitestone Bridge each day. The bridge first opened in 1939.
