A Long Island man has been charged with attempted kidnapping for allegedly entering a Flushing home earlier this week and trying to abduct a 7-year-old girl who was in her bed.

Pete Haughton, 32, of Brentwood, allegedly entered a house on Lawrence Street at around 7 a.m. on Monday and then grabbed the girl who was sleeping in her bedroom. The defendant, who is believed to have been a stranger, then tried to drag her out the front door but was saved when her family members heard her cries and stopped him.

“This is a parent’s worst nightmare,” said Queens District Attorney Melinda Katz. “If not for her loved ones hearing her screams and acting to save her, this could have had a truly tragic outcome.”

Haughton was arraigned Tuesday afternoon on charges of attempted kidnapping, burglary, assault and endanger the welfare of a child. He was ordered held without bail and faces up to 25 years in prison.

Horrifying. A parent’s worst nightmare. I hope the people who don’t believe in jails read this story.
