A man was arrested in Virginia Saturday, about 24 hours after he allegedly stabbed three women to death inside a house in Springfield Gardens.
Jabari Burrell, 22, was nabbed by police on the side of the road on Interstate 95 in Prince George County, Virg., after the minivan he was driving ran out of gas, according to published reports.
Burrell, who was covered in blood when he was caught by police, was taken into custody and then allegedly confessed to slaying his victims — aged 26, 47 and 65 — inside a two-story house at 146-39 182nd St. during the early hours Friday, according to NBC News. He then fled the scene at around 5 a.m.
The victims — who were all stabbed in the neck, chest and head — were discovered Friday at around 10:40 a.m. A knife was recovered from a bathroom in the home, police sources said.
The women all lived in the house and have been named as Hyacinth Brown-Johnson, 65, Latoya Gordon, 47, and Patrice Johnson, 26, police said.
The oldest woman was the mother to the 47-year-old victim and the stepmother to the 26-year-old victim. The youngest victim had cerebral palsy and was bedbound, according to reports.
Brown-Johnson and Johnson were found in one bedroom, while Gordon was found in a second bedroom, according to the New York Daily News.
It is understood that Burrell was related to the victims. However, the police did not say what the exact nature of the relationship was. The NYPD did not provide Burrell’s address.
Burrell is awaiting extradition from Virginia and charges remain pending.
Police are still trying to piece together the circumstances surrounding the killings and have not revealed any further information pertaining to the incident.
Mayor Eric Adams visited the scene Friday, according to reports.
NYPD Commissioner Keechant Sewell took to Twitter Saturday to praise the swift actions of law enforcement in apprehending Burrell.
“The quick investigative work of NYPD detectives has led our law enforcement partners in Virginia to the individual wanted for the tragic murder of three women in Queens,” Sewell tweeted.
“The suspect has been taken into custody and is currently awaiting extradition.”
