Batters up!

Major League Baseball is calling on young sluggers to participate in a free home run derby in East Elmhurst Sunday.

The MLB, in conjunction with the Variety Boys & Girls Club of Queens and Elmjack Little League, is hosting the event that will take place at Elmjack Fields at noon.

The kids will compete in two divisions, U12 and U14, with the aim of scoring as many home runs as possible.

Costa Constantinides, who is the new CEO of the Variety Boys & Girls Club in Astoria, said that each child will receive 15 pitches. He said that a child’s father, coach or anyone can be the pitcher.

The top three kids in each division will face off in a final. The champion will advance on to a regional competition organized by MLB.

Constantinides, who represented Astoria in the city council before stepping down in April, said he is hopeful that about 50 to 100 children attend.

“This is an opportunity for kids to have a good time and have some fun,” Constantinides said. “It’s time for some light hearted fun.”

He said that Queens Borough Donovan Richards is likely to attend and hit a few balls.

Participants can pre-register at the following link or register on the day. Same-day registration starts at 11 a.m.
