91-Year-Old Pedestrian Struck Dead by SUV in Maspeth Tuesday

A 91-year-old woman was fatally struck by a driver of an SUV while attempting to cross a Maspeth street Tuesday.

Vera Schneider was walking across Eliot Avenue and 72nd Street at around 12:35 p.m. when she was hit by a 2019 Cadillac Escalade driven by a 51-year-old man, according to police.

Cops arrived on the scene a short time afterward and came across the elderly woman unconscious and unresponsive with trauma to her body.

She was transported to NYC Health & Hospitals/Elmhurst by EMS but could not be saved.

The senior had been walking westbound across 72nd Street when the driver struck her while making a left turn from Eliot Avenue onto 72nd Street. The driver remained at the scene, police said.

The investigation is ongoing and police have yet to determine if the driver ran a red light.

The deceased woman was from 76th Street in Middle Village, police said.
