Forest Hills Library to close for six weeks to undergo roof replacement

April 20, 2017 By Hannah Wulkan

Forest Hills Library will shut down for repairs for about six weeks beginning tomorrow, according to a spokeswoman for the Queens Library.

The popular library at 108-19 71st Avenue, which is the sixth-most visited library out of the 62 branches in Queens, will close beginning at 6 p.m. tomorrow evening and will undergo an entire roof replacement over the next six weeks, the spokeswoman said.

As an intermediary measure while the library is closed, there will be mobile library service on Fridays and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the corner of 108th Street and 71st Avenue. Those looking for a good book can also visit the North Forest Park branch at 98-27 Metropolitan Avenue.

The project was supposed to take place in November, but was postponed to ensure all permits were approved, and then was postponed again from February due to the weather.

The roof repairs will cost about $650,000 and were fully funded through funding from Councilwoman Karen Koslowitz.

Roof replacement can be the most expensive investment you made for your building. Hence, when it comes to a library roof, then I believe it needs more money as compared to normal houses because usually the roofs of such buildings are bigger than typical houses. However I am confused at one point that Forest Hill Library is closed just for six weeks, whereas being a roofer in Schulte roofing company I believe that it will take 8 to 10 weeks.
