Kew Gardens: FDNY digs construction worker trapped under 7-ton hammer out

April 5, 2017 Staff Report

A construction worker in Kew Gardens was hospitalized this morning after being trapped under a 7-ton hammer on the job.

According to the FDNY, the hammer was being used to drive steel sheeting in to the ground at 80-25 126th Street, but landed on the worker around 10:20 a.m. after an accident.

The FDNY responded to the scene and addressed three separate issues in freeing the worker. First, the fire fighters stabilized the hammer to ensure that it could not fall more and cause further injury, then EMS administered medical care to the trapped man to stabilize him, and finally the responders dug under the man to free him from under the heavy equipment.

The scene was under control by 11:14 a.m., according to an FDNY spokesman, and the man was taken to Jamaica Hospital in serious but stable condition.

“What you saw take place here that quickly and that efficiently was due to constant training,” said FDNY Deputy Chief James DiDomenico in a statement on Facebook.
