Mayor Bill de Blasio set a date today for the special election to fill the City Council seat recently vacated by Rory Lancman.
The special election for the 24th City Council District will be held on Tuesday, Feb. 2, 2021, de Blasio announced Friday evening. The district covers Kew Gardens Hills, Fresh Meadows, Hillcrest, Pomonok, Jamaica Estate and Briarwood.
The winner of the special election will serve for less than a year — to finish Lancman’s term that was to end on Dec. 31, 2021.
Lancman, who was term limited, stepped down from his position in the City Council on Wednesday to join Governor Andrew Cuomo’s administration.
Cuomo announced last week that he had appointed Lancman as Special Counsel for Ratepayer Protection, a newly-created position where he represents the interests of residential and commercial customers of regulated electric, gas, water and telecom companies.
