Share Stories of Kew Gardens at Queens Memory Project Event Next Week

Kew Gardens residents are invited to share their stories about the neighborhood at an event organized by Kew Gardens Arts and the Queens Memory Project next week.

The storytelling event will be held Monday from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at The Potter’s Wheel studio, located at 120-33 83rd Ave, as part of The Kew Gardens: Then and Now Project.

Both longtime and new residents are welcome to attend.

Some of the stories will be included in a community book, which will be published later this year thanks to a grant provided by The Citizens Committee for New York City.

Participants can also talk to Queens Memory team members about preserving their stories in the Queens Public Library’s local history archives. Queens Memory is a project of both Queens Public Library and Queens College, CUNY to collect stories, images and documents related to life in Queens for the archives.

Kew Gardens residents interested in participating in Monday’s event can register online for free. Residents can also submit their stories online, for a chance to be featured in the community book.

A Long Island man was sentenced to 20 years in prison Wednesday in Queens Supreme Court after pleading guilty to kidnapping, robbery, and promoting prostitution for three separate incidents.

Gil Iphael, 25, of Copiague Street in Valley Stream, lured his victims to Queens locations for sex with the help of his co-defendant, then his victims were detained, assaulted, and robbed. In one instance, Iphael tried to cut off a man’s toe and threatened to mutilate his genitals.
