Sporting goods chain Dick’s is opening a new branch in Forest Hills this spring.

A spokesman for the company confirmed that Dick’s would be opening up a branch at 73-25 Woodhaven Boulevard sometime this spring, taking the place of former competitor Sports Authority.

According to the Wall Street Journal, Dick’s acquired the Sports Authority brand after it filed for bankruptcy last year, and is taking over many of its locations. The Forest Hills Sports Authority closed last July.

The Forest Hills location will be the first Dick’s in Queens, and represents an early effort at entering the New York City market for the brand, with the only other store in the city located on Staten Island, according to the company website.

Sports Authority had three stores in New York City– including a Northern Boulevard location in Woodside–and more than 20 in New Jersey. Details as to what’s happening to the Woodside location have yet to be disclosed.

An opening date has not been set for the Dick’s Forest Hills store, and the company has not released any further information on the store opening.
