Forest Hills Festival of the Arts (Facebook)

June 5, 2019 By Meghan Sackman

The Forest Hills Chamber of Commerce will host its 19th Annual Festival of the Arts this Sunday on Austin Street between 69th and 72nd Roads.

Close to 200 vendors will be stationed along the street selling merchandise, food and crafts. The event, which will include about 100 Forest Hills businesses, will go from 10 a.m. through 6 p.m.

Several well-known Forest Hills establishments will have tables at the festival, including: 5 Borro Cafe, a popular Mexican restaurant; Foxes, a women’s clothing boutique; Numero 28 Pizzeria; and Mojo Restaurant, a Latin fusion eatery.

There will be live music and performances near 70th Road starting at 11 a.m. Several local groups and organizations–such as Sheridan’s Fencing Academy and Tiger Shulmann’s Martial Arts School–will be displaying their skills.

Admission to the event is free and it will take place rain or shine.

“We get tens of thousands of people every year,” said Leslie Brown, executive director of the Chamber of Commerce, who said this is an event that combines commerce, culture, and community, in a way that everyone enjoys. “It’s one of the best fairs in New York.”

The event is sponsored by Borough President Melinda Katz, Council Member Karen Koslowitz, Ridgewood Savings Bank, Northwell Health Forest Hills Hospital, among others.

Why is this scheduled on Shavuot? Isn’t there someone who checks the calendar for religious holidays? It’s upsetting considering the Jewish community here in Forest Hills. Maybe next year this can be considered and respected.

You are not inclined to go. If Jewish culture and religion is TRULY important to you, do not go.

Aug. 19, 2025 By Jessica Militello

In Jackson Heights at 4 p.m. on a Thursday afternoon, Roosevelt Avenue is buzzing with energy as commuters file in and out of subway cars and onto the street and cars and trucks grapple to get down the busy road. The street is filled with rows of shops and restaurants, along with food carts, street vendors and food trucks along the avenue. The almost-but-not-quite the weekend lag leaves hungry commuters faced with another choice to make throughout their day and the array of food truck options in busy areas like Jackson Heights offers customers convenience and delicious food without breaking the bank, two features that can feel vital, particularly with rising costs of living and pressure from inflation.
