A 29-year-old man was struck dead by a hit-and-run driver on Continental Avenue yesterday while he was crossing the street.

Niklas Ahern, a Manhattan resident, was hit at the intersection of Continental Avenue and Slocum Crescent at about 5:30 p.m. Sunday by an unidentified driver.

Police arrived on the scene and discovered Ahern unconscious and unresponsive, lying on the roadway with trauma to his head and body. EMS transported him to Long Island Jewish Forest Hills Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

According to a police investigation, Ahern was struck by a vehicle traveling northbound on Continental Avenue while he was crossing from the northeast corner of the Exeter Street-Continental intersection to the southwest corner of the Slocum Crescent-Continental Avenue intersection.

The vehicle continued traveling northbound and did not stop.

There have been no arrests and the investigation is ongoing.

How sad. There really need to be more speed bumps in the area as I have been almost hit on many occasions around there and on Austin street, through the shopping down to the basketball courts. The driving is out of control, sadly. I hope they find who did this and convict them and sending prayers to the family.

A true tragedy. The police will find this driver. I have faith in them. I suspect the driver was drunk or on drugs, which is usually the case with “hits and runs.” People will say the streets are dark. Streets are dark in most communities across the United States. Speed bumps as a solution? In my opinion, they are abusive to folks who obey the laws – and that is most of us. This is about an irresponsible driver and the onus is on that driver. He must come forward. If not, he will be found anyway. In the meantime, may the pedestrian rest in peace and may his family be surrounded by loved ones who give them some comfort.

The New York City Council passed a landmark bill on Wednesday, aiming to relieve renters of paying hefty broker fees — a cost that will now fall on the party who hires the listing agent. Known as the FARE Act (Fairness in Apartment Rentals), the legislation passed with a veto-proof majority of 42-8, despite opposition from Republicans and conservative Democrats.
