Festival Will Celebrate Music, Dance and Food of the Jewish Diaspora

Oct. 19, 2018 By Tara Law

An Israeli women’s empowerment organization will showcase Jewish food from Morocco, Uzbekistan, Ethiopia and Yemen at an upcoming food festival in Forest Hills.

The Bukharian Jewish Community Center at 106-16 70th Ave. will host the Israeli group Women Cook for a special evening of traditional Jewish music, dancing and food on Nov. 4.

The evening will raise money for Women Cook, an Israeli social initiative working to preserve Jewish culinary culture by employing women from disadvantaged communities. The organization specifically helps women who have immigrated to Israel from other countries.

Five women who moved to Israel from different parts of the world will prepare some of their best dishes.

These women will include Drora Meidani, who is planning to serve a Yemeni soup and hilbeh, a dip made with fenugreek seeds.

Meidani’s family traveled to Israel from Yemen by boat. In Israel, she worked as an aide in a hospital’s neurological department for 25 years and raised four children.

Another visiting cook will be Feteg Andarga, who was born in Gondar, Ethiopia. Andarga is the mother of six children, and worked for many years as a hothouse tomato grower.

Andarga plans to serve an Ethiopian lentil dish, daboo bread and other specialties.

After serving the meal, each of the women will share stories about their cultural backgrounds and life experiences.

Tickets for the event are $55 and are available for purchase on Eventbrite.
