The Long Island Railroad has opened longer platforms at the Forest Hills and Kew Gardens stations, the railroad announced today.
The platforms are now 50 percent longer than they were before, enabling six train cars to meet the platform instead of four, the railroad said. LIRR trains can be up to 12 cars long.
The measure is intended to reduce congestion at the stations, limit delays and help passengers to board and exit trains more easily, the railroad said.
The project began on July 23 and lasted about seven weeks, the LIRR said. The north and south platforms at both stations were extended with fiberglass decking.
LIRR President Philip Eng said that the project will benefit both Queens residents and customers who ride from Nassau and Suffolk to Penn Station.
“I hope that this project demonstrates the new sense of urgency that the LIRR is bringing to bear on projects that can improve our customers’ commutes,” Eng said.
The Forest Hills and Kew Gardens stations have an average weekday ridership of 1,967 and 1,778 passengers, respectively. Forest Hills has become a popular destination for visitors to Forest Hills Stadium in recent years.

I’m glad these are open, not quite so glad they’re being held up by metal matchsticks.
