Jazz Thursdays Returns to Forest Hills Aug. 16 and 23

Aug. 15, 2018 By Tara Law

Performers will transform 70th Road into a jazz club tomorrow and next week during a pair of free concerts.

The Forest Hills Chamber of Commerce will once again host its special Jazz Thursdays events at 7 p.m. on Aug. 16 and 23 on 70th Road between Austin Street and Queens Boulevard.

Tomorrow’s concert will feature LA Blacksmith, a saxophonist, flutist and vocalist, along with ensemble Jazz Plus. The performers will pay a tribute to jazz greats Herbie Hancock and Grover Washington.

LA Blacksmith has performed alongside various acts, including The Drifters, Ben E. King, Shirley Alston and The Shirelles, according to the Forest Hills Chamber of Commerce.

Then next week, 11-piece band Spanglish Fly will take to the street.

Spanglish Fly is known for the style called “Latin bogaloo,” which mixes Latin, soul and R&B. In the band’s words, the style “blends Afro-Caribbean percussion and rhythms with the fervor, the feeling, and the bluesiness of 60s-era soul.”

The band features the vocals of Mariella Gonzalez and Paloma Muñoz in English and Spanish, as well as three percussionists, four horns, swinging bass, and piano/organ.

Seating— and space for dancing— will be available, and guests are also encouraged to visit nearby restaurants with outdoor seating to take in the shows.

Is this on Thursday, Aug 16th and 23rd or Wednesday, Aug 15th and 22nd? Confusing inaccuracy. Otherwise, sounds exciting!
