Key Food on Yellowstone Blvd to Close by April 1 as Wrecking Ball Looms

Key Food supermarket located on Yellowstone Boulevard will be closed by April 1, according to Councilwoman Karen Koslowitz’ office.

The supermarket is closing to make way for a 11-story, 168-unit apartment building on the 69-65 Yellowstone Blvd site.

The project has generated controversy since June when permits were filed by Slate Property, the developer, to demolish the supermarket, long regarded as a community necessity.

Community members, including Council member Karen Koslowitz, voiced concerns at the time since many residents depend on the supermarket.

Michael Cohen, a spokesman for Koslowitz’ office, said that the councilwoman has been in talks with Slate Property, and the developer is open to including a supermarket in the new building.

However, Cohen said, Key Food was not doing that well financially and may have closed even if the site wasn’t being developed. He said that while Koslowitz is seeking a new supermarket operator, it may not be straight forward finding one when the project is complete given the financials.

Slate Property filed plans in November to construct the building that will include retail space on the ground floor and lower level.

It sucks that it is closing, C town on Queens Blvd is now the closest for a lot of people and the guy that runs the place has purposely been jacking up prices ever since word got out that keyfood was closing.
