Some of Queens’ best artists will be displaying their work Sunday at the Kew Gardens Community Arts Day.
The event will be held near the intersection of Lefferts Boulevard and Austin Street from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. The rain date is October 1.
The day’s signature event is the Kew Gardens Outdoor Art Fair, where 25 local artists will exhibit and sell their original works. The artwork includes, pottery, photography, glass, jewelry, fiber art, illustration, sculpture and wall art.
“If you walk the streets of Kew Gardens you might not know we have a lot of artists,” said Carol Lacks, an organizer. “We want to bring positive attention to the artists by doing things the public can see.”
Attendees will be able to create their own art at the fair. The festival is hosting an “art zone” where the public can learn international art styles. An area of the sidewalk will also be set aside for the public to create their own chalk drawings.
Artists will also demonstrate their craft. Grace Anker, the owner of the Kew Garden’s based Potter’s Wheel, will show how she makes pottery from 2 to 4 p.m. Artist Liana Shemper will lead an art lesson to show how she creates her works with wood. From 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m., Jacob Reinstein will sketch portraits of people.
Attendees will also have the opportunity to visit Queens newest bookstore, Kew & Willow Books, which is located at 81-63 Lefferts Blvd.The store will host children’s activities throughout the day and story readings at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. The store will be open for browsing from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.
The event has a small town feel to it, Lacks said, since many of the artists of locals.
“Although there are artists from all over Queens, it’s mostly art from people right here in Kew Gardens,” Lacks said. “It’s art by people you see in the store or in the street every day.”
