Local group looking for volunteers to cleanup MacDonald Park this Saturday

Aug. 15, 2017 By Jason Cohen

A grassroots organization in Forest Hills is holding a cleanup of MacDonald Park Saturday and is looking for volunteers.

The event, titled Midsummer Volunteer Day, will be held from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

The group, the Friends of Macdonald Park, is looking for people to clean, weed, trim and shape shrubs, care for trees, and water park grounds. The event is open to all. Gloves, tools and refreshments will be provided.

Service credit will also be given to students who participate. The cleanup will be held rain or shine.

MacDonald Park, located at 8720 Queens Blvd., Forest Hills, is bounded by 70th Road as well as Queens and Yellowstone Boulevards.

Friends of MacDonald Park was founded in 2013 and its volunteers participate in projects to help maintain and improve MacDonald Park. They come together at least once a month to clean the area as well as weed and trim shrubbery that the Parks Dept. struggles to maintain.

Stephen Melnick, who leads the group, said that the Parks Department is short staffed and therefore does not have the ability to do a thorough job cleaning up the trash on certain days of the week.

“The park is a disaster on Fridays and Saturdays,” he claimed.
