Aug. 8, 2017 By Nathaly Pesantez

Parts of Forest Hills, Kew Gardens, and Rego Park will be sprayed with pesticide Thursday night to reduce the risk of West Nile Virus, according to the Department of Health (DOH).

On Thursday, August 10, trucks will drive through Forest Hills, Forest Hills Gardens, Kew Gardens, Rego Park, and Woodhaven and spray Anvil® 10+10, a mosquito adulticide.

The area sprayed spans from Mt. Zion Cemetery in Maspeth past the southernmost part of Flushing Meadows Park, and hits Forest Park on the south.

These areas, along with other parts of Queens and Staten Island, have had an increase in West Nile Virus activity, according to the DOH, and have also seen high numbers of a certain mosquito known to transmit the virus.

Spraying will take place between 9:00 p.m. and 6:00 a.m. the following morning.

To minimize direct expose, the DOH recommends people stay indoors during spraying, especially those with asthma or other respiratory conditions. If skin or clothing is exposed to pesticides, wash with soap and water.

Air conditioners may remain on, but the vent can be set to the closed position to reduce the possibility of indoor exposure to the pesticides.

The DOH also recommends washing outdoor equipment with soap and water if exposed to pesticides.

No human cases of West Nile virus have been reported this season to date.
