Jun. 13, 2023 By Anthony Medina

Finding entertainment during the summer months in Queens won’t be an issue for anyone who pays a visit to the George Seuffert Bandshell at Forest Park in Woodhaven

The Forest Park 2023 Summer Concert Series will bring multiple performances to the greater Forest Hills, Glendale, Woodhaven and surrounding neighborhoods starting Thursday, June 29, at 7:30 p.m.

The Queens Symphony Orchestra will celebrate its 70th Anniversary with a concert of blockbuster and patriotic songs, right before the Fourth of July weekend, at 7:30 p.m.

For every Thursday in July, performances start at 7:30 p.m. with a mixture of tribute bands and musical talent. On July 6, Captain Jack, a Billy Joel Tribute Band, brings a performance that captures the very essence of the iconic six-time Grammy Award winner and 23-time nominee.

On July 13, Plaza Theatrical Productions performs Jonathan Larson’s Broadway musical “Rent” which won a Tony Award for best musical. On July 20, Jesse Garron’s Tribute to Elvis takes concert-goers back in time to when the “King of Rock” was at his prime.

The last performance for the month on July 27 will feature The Shining Star Earth Wind and Fire Tribute Band. They’ll bring 10 vocalists and musicians to forest park to play some of the iconic band’s best hits from “Shining Star” and “September.”

Starting on Aug. 3, the Tina Turner Tribute Band, Forever Tina, compliments the late “Queen of rock-n-roll” with its show at 7:30 p.m. The Paul McCartney Tribute Band also joins the array of tribute artists on Aug. 10, at the same time.

On Aug. 17, at 7 p.m. the Queensboro Dance Festival comes to Forest Park in a 10th-anniversary summer tour celebration, showcasing queens-based dance companies on stage.

The summer concert series comes to an end on Aug. 18, at 7:30 p.m. with a screening of the movie “School of Rock” featuring legendary musician and actor, Jack Black.

Op-ed | New York’s ground lease co-ops: Our families can’t wait any longer

Jan. 14, 2025 By Michael Tang

Last December brought a long-awaited victory for New York City. Our City Council adopted the historic City of Yes housing plan, paving the way for more than 80,000 new homes by 2040 with the promise of affordability. As a longtime resident of Flushing, Queens, I naturally welcomed the news – it’s a much-needed reprieve for New Yorkers as housing costs continue to soar in the midst of an unparalleled housing crisis. But entering 2025 on the heels of this win, we residents at  Murray Hill Cooperative remain at risk — our lives are virtually unchanged because we belong to the last class of unprotected “tenants” as ground lease co-op residents. Without legislative action, more than 25,000 New Yorkers face the threat of losing their homes — homes that we own — to landowners seeking to raise our ground rent to astronomical rates.
